Sewing machine needles of the well-known high quality from German brand Schmetz.
Assorted universal needles include universal needles in three different sizes: Two needles size 70/10, two needles in size 80/12, and one needle in size 90/14. These three sizes are the ones you will most often need when sewing in woven fabric.
A good rule of thumb is that the needle size should increase with thicker fabric.
Size 70/10 needles are good for most lightweight, tightly woven fabrics, such as most canvas weaves in cotton, viscose, tencel, and linen.
Size 80/12 is good for most medium-weight, tightly woven fabrics, such as dense twill weaves in wool and cotton like denim.
Size 90/14 is suitable for heavier, tightly woven fabrics, such as canvas and heavy denim.
If you are new to sewing, it’s not very motivating to spend all your time and energy finding the perfect needle instead of sewing. By choosing a universal needle, you can almost always count on a fine result. That way, you’ll have a lot of good sewing experiences that will give you the desire and courage to sew even more.
Remember that the most important thing in your choice of sewing machine needles is to regularly replace your needle. Unless you are sewing in very delicate or special fabrics, a new needle is the most important single factor for a good result.
An old needle can be frayed or bent even if you can’t see it. This poses a risk of poor stitch formation. It causes the stitches in your seam to jump from side to side because the crooked needle can more easily be “pushed” slightly to the side by the fibers in your fabric. You may also experience the machine simply skipping stitches when your needle is bent.
The sewing machine cannot properly form the stitches because a crooked needle tip does not hit precisely where it should. Finally, you risk a bent needle pulling threads in your fabric, and that’s unfortunate! There’s rarely much you can do once a thread has been pulled in your fabric.
Remember. To. Change. Your. Needle. Regularly.
